IPL 2018 retentions: What did the team owners ask for in the Governing Council meeting?
Yesterday, representatives of all the IPL teams attended the Governing Council meeting in which they discussed various things which include the venue for the 2018 IPL auction, date and venue for the season opener, players' salary cap etc. with players retention being the top agenda.
According to reports in ESPNCricinfo, the governing council were in favour of allowing three retentions per team and it was not well received by the IPL franchises. The most successful team in the IPL, Mumbai Indians, wanted a total of seven players to be back with them for next season while their arch-rivals, Chennai Super Kings, who are coming back from suspension, wanted five players to be retained.

Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals, the other team that is coming back from suspension along with Chennai, want all the names to be in the auction pool so that all the teams can start from the scratch.
This is what the teams wanted at the IPL Governing Council:
IPL Governing Council: Three retentions in total
Chennai Super Kings: Four retentions and one Right to Match (RTM) card
Mumbai Indians: Five retentions and two RTM cards.
Kolkata Knight Riders: Zero retentions and five RTM cards.
Sunrisers Hyderabad: Three retentions and two RTM cards.
Rajasthan Royals: Zero retentions and RTMs. Want a fresh auction.
Kings XI Punjab: Zero retentions and RTMs. Want a fresh auction.
Delhi Daredevils: No information from the franchise.
Royal Challengers Bangalore: Three retentions and two RTM cards.
It is understood that both Mumbai and Chennai, who have won five titles between them, want to retain as many players as possible so that they can keep their core that helped them become a successful team.
It is also revealed that both Chennai and Royals can only retain players from their 2015 squads which means Delhi Daredevils can't have the likes of Chris Morris and Sanju Samson in their team if Royals retain the duo as they played for them in 2015.
The report also suggested that Kolkata, Royals and Kings XI want the salary cap to be hiked to INR 70-80 crore per team from INR 63 crore that was used at the 2017 auction while the other franchises left that decision to the governing council.
*RTM stands for Right to Match cards. If a player (X), who played for teamĀ (Y) in the previous season, is acquired by another team (Z) in the auction, Y can use their RTM card and get X for the same amount of money for which Z bought him.
