IPL 6: KKR desperate for win, Rajasthan look to hold onto play-off berth
Date – 3rd May, 2013
Time – 8.00 p.m (IST)
The Kolkata Knight Riders are virtually out of the competition following their defeat to the Delhi Daredevils. Kolkata however have an outside chance of qualifying for the play-offs, but for that they have to win the remaining games and hope for other results to go in their favour. Rajasthan, on the other hand, are in contention for the fourth spot.
Kolkata Knight Riders haven’t played to the full potential. The middle order hasn’t fired, and they are heavily reliant on Gautam Gambhir. Jacques Kallis hasn’t been in the best of form with the bat, and the same can be said for Manoj Tiwary. Gautam Gambhir hasn’t found the perfect combination on the field either, with the major problem being their death bowling. Balaji has been their key man at the death overs, where his pace variations become significant. Gautam Gambhir has to come up with an effective strategy against Rajasthan if they are to stay in the competition.
Rajasthan Royals, on the other hand, have been consistent performers in this season’s IPL. Shane Watson’s presence has made a huge impact, and they have already defeated Kolkata in Jaipur. Chandila has been the stand-out performer for the Royals, especially with the new-ball. He would relish bowling at the Eden Gardens, as the wicket, more often than not, aids spinners. KKR have a good track record at home and it should be an interesting contest.
Pitch and Conditions
The wicket at Eden Garden helps spinners, and tends to get slower as the match progresses. Both sides have quality spinners, and would prefer to bat first.
Players to watch
Kolkata are heavily reliant on Gautam Gambhir, and his presence in the middle will be critical for the Knight Riders.
Shane Watson has been the key protagonist for the Royals at the top of the order. Shane Watson has worked hard on his fitness, and has been in phenomenal form with the bat, and in recent games with the ball. He didn’t play against Kolkata in Jaipur, and will be tested at the Eden Gardens on a turning wicket.
Prediction
Kolkata are desperate for a win at home. They know the conditions better than the Rajasthan Royals, and the Royals haven’t performed very well on slow wickets. Therefore, Kolkata have a slight edge over their opponents.
