Gujarat Lions played Sunrisers Hyderabad on 6th May 2016. Lions lost to Delhi Daredevils in a one-sided encounter in their previous game. On the other hand, Sunrisers restricted a strong Royal Challengers Bangalore line-up to win by 15 runs in their last game. Lions would go on top of the table if they beat Sunrisers. Whereas Sunrisers have the chance to move into the top four if they won. Sunrisers Hyderabad won the toss and elected to field first.
Sunrisers bowlers do the early damage
Sunrisers bowlers started with two maiden overs on the trot. Bhuvneshwar removed Dwayne Smith in the third over for just 1 run. Raina looked good at the start when he Bhuvneshwar for a six and a four but the bowler sent him packing in the same over. Mustafizur then picked up Dinesh Karthik to reduce Gujarat at 26/3 at the end of the powerplay
Aaron Finch fighting the lone battle
Moises Henriques then ended the mysery of McCullum at the crease. He scored 7 runs off 19 balls. Aaron Finch and Dwayne Bravo tried to steady the innings but the bowlers kept the pressure up. Barinder Sran then added to his wicket’s counter as he dismissed Dwayne Bravo. Aaron Finch held one end and tried all he could to give the Lions a fighting total. But no one stayed with him for too long and Lions finish at a mediocre total of 126/6. Finch finished not out at 51.
Lions’ bowlers strike early
The in-form David Warner started off on a high note before Dhawal Kulkarni accounted for his wicket for 24. Praveen Kumar then sent the half-centurion from the previous game Kane Williamson back. Shikhar Dhawan and Moises Henriques then got together to consolidate the innings but Dwayne Bravo brought the game back in balance when he dismissed Henriques.
Yuvraj failed on his Sunrisers’ debut game
A lot was expected from the Yuvraj. He was making a comeback after suffering from an injury in the ICC World T20. He did not have the kind of start he was hoping for and was dismissed by Dhawal Kulkarni for 5 runs off 14 balls.
Sunrisers win a low scoring game
Dwayne Bravo got his second wicket as he dismissed Deepak Hooda. Shikhar Dhawan stayed till the end and scored a steady innings of 47. It was a tough wicket to bat on. The Lions’ bowlers need to be praised as they fought till the end and did not give up too easily. But in the end, it was a rather comfortable chase for the Sunrisers.
Suresh Raina is a disappointed man. He reckons the team did not bat really well. He is happy with the bowling though. The bowlers indeed put up a good fight defending a small total. But at the end, the Sunrisers’ bowlers again stood up and won the game in the first innings itself. Bhuvneshwar Kumar for his wonderful spell is the Man of the Match. Shikhar’s innings is another positive to take home for the Sunrisers. They move to the number 4 on the points table with this win and Lions remain at number 2.
