The 12th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is seriously up and running. After a slow and sluggish first game, all the other games have been close and exciting affairs. This one between the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) was a pulsating one as well.

After being put into bat, Chris Gayle overturned a slow start to smash a fine 79 as his knock took KXIP took to 184. Sarfraz Khan, who was making his debut for KXIP, struck a 29-ball 46 as he helped Punjab finish with a flourish. Jofra Archer was the standout bowler but was unlucky not to pick up a wicket in his four-over spell where he conceded just 17 runs.

RR were on course to chase it down. Ajinkya Rahane started well but it was Jos Buttler who was going great guns. He scored 69 off 43 balls before Ravichandran Ashwin ran him out for backing up too far (Mankading). RR’s chase derailed after that point despite a few good strokes from Steve Smith and Sanju Samson who threw away starts. Hence, in the end, KXIP emerged victorious by 14 runs.

Here are all the stats from the RR-KXIP game.

4 – It’s the fourth time in six innings that Dhawal Kulkarni has dismissed KL Rahul in T20 cricket.

4000 – Chris Gayle became the ninth batsman to score 4000 runs in IPL cricket. He is also just the second overseas player (after David Warner) to achieve the feat.

112 – Innings taken by Chris Gayle to reach 4000 IPL runs. It’s the fastest by any player in the league. He beat David Warner’s record of 114 innings. Virat Kohli is third on the list, having got to the landmark in 128 innings.

1 – Despite playing 24 matches for Rajasthan Royals, today marked Steve Smith’s first game at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.

1 – This is the first time in IPL that a player has been ‘Mankaded’ (runout without the ball being completed as the non-striker was backing up too far). Jos Buttler had backed up too far ahead and KXIP skipper Ravichandran Ashwin whipped the bails off to dismiss Buttler in the most unlikely fashion.

2 – This is the second time Jos Buttler has been ‘Mankaded’ in his cricket career. The first time it happened was in 2014 when Sachithra Senanayake had dismissed the England wicket-keeper in an ODI.

8 – Chris Gayle is now 8th on the list of highest run-getters in the IPL. He has now scored 4073 runs. When he was on 23, he went past MS Dhoni’s run tally of 4016 runs. He trails David Warner who has amassed 4099 runs.

1 – This was KXIP’s first win in Jaipur. They had lost all five games at the venue before today.
