James Taylor forced to retire due to serious heart condition

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have announced that James Taylor has been forced to retire because of a serious heart condition. Taylor was diagnosed with Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Arrhythmia (ARVA) on Monday.

Nottinghamshire CCC’s official website have described Taylor’s condition as being similar to that of former footballer Fabrice Muamba who had collapsed during a FA Cup match in 2012. Taylor is set to undergo a surgery which is scheduled to happen in the coming days.

The 26-year-old represented England in 7 Tests and 27 ODIs. He had become a regular of the Test side in the recent past and had played all four Tests against South Africa in the series which England won 2-1.

The Nottingham-born cricketer took to Twitter to express his disappointment and mentioned that it was the “toughest week of his life”.

Speaking about Taylor’s sudden forced retirement, England Team Director Andrew Strauss said: "It is both shocking and saddening to hear that James' career has been cut short in such a sudden and unexpected manner.

“Throughout his career, he has constantly impressed with his determination to make the absolute most of his ability, and it is immensely cruel that such a hard working player will be unable to fulfil his great potential in the international arena.

“The ECB will work closely with Nottinghamshire and together we will do everything possible to help James through this difficult period, and aid him in his recovery."

Many former and current cricketers took to Twitter to show their support for Taylor.
