Jasprit Bumrah, Harmanpreet Kaur among four Indian sportspersons in Forbes India 30 Under 30 List

What’s the story?

Indian cricketers Jasprit Bumrah and Harmanpreet Kaur were included in this year’s Forbes India 30 Under 30 list. The 24-year old Indian fast bowler and 28-year Indian women’s team all-rounder were among the four Indian athletes to be named in the aforementioned list.

The other two sportspersons to be included are hockey goalkeeper Savita Punia and pistol shooter Heena Sidhu.

The Details

Forbes India released an entire list of 30 people on Monday (5th February). On their website, Forbes India also explained the process through which different personalities were selected.

“Through our own research and multiple conversations with industry experts, we selected names that meet our three broad criteria: The extent of impact of their achievements, and their ability to disrupt the status quo; scalability of the business or line of work and; their potential to stay a long-term player,” it stated.

In case you didn’t know…

Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah made his international debut in January 2016 and since then has been one of India’s frontline bowlers in limited overs formats and has been excellent. Recently, he made his Test debut in South Africa and performed exceedingly well. The 24-year old Gujarat pacer has taken 112 international wickets.

India’s women’s all-rounder Harmanpreet Kaur has been one of the best players in the Indian women’s team over the last few years. Her exploits in the World Cup helped India reach the final. Kaur’s knock of 171 in the semi-final against Australia was rated among one of the best World Cup knocks by an Indian. She was also the first Indian cricketer to sign up for the Big Bash League. She played two seasons for the Sydney Thunder.

What’s next?

Both Jasprit Bumrah and Harmanpreet Kaur are in South Africa playing limited-overs series’ for their respective teams. Bumrah is currently involved in a 6-match ODI series, while Harmanpreet Kaur is playing a 3-match ODI series against hosts South Africa which will be followed by a 5-match T20I series.

It is a very good sign that Indian cricketers have been recognised for their effort. Bumrah has been in superb form and truly deserves to be on the list. Meanwhile, Harmanpreet Kaur thoroughly deserves her place in the list as well. Also, her inclusion in the Forbes India 30 list just shows the evolution of women’s cricket in India.
