Jasprit Bumrah — India's next fast bowling star?
Jasprit Jasbir Singh Bumrah is a 19 year old upcoming right arm medium fast bowler. Energetic and young, Bumrah was born in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He plays for Gujarat in the domestic circuit. Incidentally, today he has got a chance to play in the Ranji trophy for Gujarat against Vidarbha. And he has given a very impressive performance. He took 4 important wickets and gave away just 30 runs – with six overs being maidens. His bowling figures read 13-6-30-4, quite impressive!
Also, his bowling average in t20s is a reasonable 22.61. He first came to the limelight in this year’s IPL, playing for Mumbai Indians. When he was playing against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, he had to bowl against the mighty Chris Gayle. Surprisingly, he bowled so well that Gayle could not do much and rather looked tied up in front of this newcomer.
Although in that particular match Bumrah got hit for three consecutive fours by Kohli in his very first over. But this young lad did not give up and rather made a strong come back and took 3 important wickets. He also got Virat Kohli lbw on the fifth ball of that very over. This was indeed an important wicket. In this match – his debut in IPL, he had a very impressive bowling spell, taking 3 for 32.
Before the IPL, Bumrah came to notice when he became man of the match during finals of Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament. Somehow, his talent got noticed by John Wright, the coach of Mumbai Indians. Hence he got a break in the IPL and had a chance to play along with Sachin Tendulkar, who was seen advising Bumrah in that match. After that match, Bumrah said that despite playing in front of a huge crowd, as well as stars like Sachin and Ponting, he remained focused. He was able to perform despite the pressure.
What makes Bumrah so unusual to deal with is his action. His arms are in a peculiar position which makes it difficult for the batsmen to pick him. He also bowls from wide of the crease, which makes him even trickier to face. His coach Kishore Trivedi insists that he should not change his action. He believes that it was natural and there should not be any drastic changes.
Jasprit Bumrah has got a tremendous fighting spirit. He has impressed one and all with the way he carries himself. His gestures and body language do commensurate well with his level of confidence and commitment. He has depicted an ambition to perform. With his sweat and toil during net practice, he is on the way to prove his mettle.
Also, on a pleasant note, impressed with Bumrah’s hardwork, Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan had once tweeted about him, appreciating the spirit of Bumrah.
This is one of the bases of my faith that he is going to contribute a lot to Indian cricket in near future and hopefully become a long term solution for the bowling issues. Best Wishes.
