What’s the story?

Indian women’s team's veteran pacer Jhulan Goswami has been ruled out of the 5-match T20I series against South Africa. She has suffered a heel injury due to which she will not be able to take further part in India’s tour of South Africa.

In case you didn’t know…

India’s women’s team is in South Africa for a tour of 3 ODIs and 5 T20Is. India beat South Africa 2-1 in the recently concluded ODI series and obtained four crucial points in the Women’s ODI Championship.

Jhulan Goswami was the second-highest wicket-taker in the series as he picked up 5 wickets and played a key role in India’s series victory (she took 4/24 and 1/29 in the first two games). In the second ODI, the veteran fast bowler also became the first female bowler to take 200 ODI wickets when she dismissed South African opener Laura Wolvaardt.

After India had clinched the series in the second game, Goswami was rested for the third and final ODI.

The heart of the matter

“Goswami suffered a heel injury and underwent an MRI scan on Monday,” said a statement released by the BCCI. It further added, “The BCCI Medical Team in consultation with a local doctor felt that she needs rest for a couple of weeks to avoid any further impact on the bone. Upon her return, Goswami will consult a foot expert and will undergo her rehab process at the NCA in Bengaluru.”

The official twitter account of the Women’s team confirmed the same.

What’s next?

The 5-match T20I series will be underway from 13th February (today) in the Potchefstroom. Three out of the five games will be televised. Meanwhile, as per BCCI’s statement, Goswami will undergo her rehab process at the NCA (National Cricket Academy) in Bengaluru.
