Jonathan Trott announces retirement from international cricket

Jonathan Trott

English batsman Jonathan Trott has retired from international cricket. The Test series against West Indies will be his last, but he will continue to play domestic cricket. He is currently contracted to English side Warwickshire and has not revealed any plans of retiring from domestic cricket.

Trott had returned to the English Test side for the 3-match Test series in the Caribbean. His last series before this was the Ashes 18 months ago, which he controversially left midway due to stress-related illness.

The Englishman, however, could not make a dream return as he managed just 72 runs in six innings against West Indies. He was dismissed for a duck thrice in the series and he reached the double figure mark just once when he scored 59 in the second Test at Granada.

Trott disappointed his comeback didn’t work out

Jonathan Trott expressed his dismay at failing to make a successful comeback to the national team.

He said, “This was a tough decision but I don't feel my game is at the level needed to play for England.

“I was honoured to come back and play international cricket again and I'm disappointed it didn't work out.”

He took time to thank fans for their support throughout his career.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped me and given me the chance to represent England and to thank supporters for all their backing over the years," added Trott.

“I also want to wish the lads all the very best for what will be an incredibly exciting summer.

“I've had incredible highs and some real lows in an England shirt but wouldn't change a thing. I look forward to continuing my career at Warwickshire and hopefully helping us win more silverware,” he concluded.

Trott has played 52 Test matches for England and has an average of a little over 44 while having a top score of 226. He had retired from One-Day cricket back in 2013 with his last match coming against Australia.

The 34-year-old made his Test debut at The Oval in 2009 against the 2015 World Cup winners where after scoring 41 in the first innings, he scored a century, 119, to help England post a memorable 197-run win against their traditional rivals.

Trott can be incredibly proud of his achievements: Cook

Captain Alastair Cook called playing with Trott an “absolute honour” before adding that Trott can be proud of his achievements.

“It has been an absolute honour to play alongside Trotty in every one of his 52 Tests,” said Cook.

“He can be incredibly proud of all he has achieved in his career and it is no coincidence that his time in international cricket has seen the team achieve some very special things, often with Trotty at the heart of our success on and off the field.”

Cook wished Trott well for the future.

“I speak on behalf of this current team and all those who have shared a dressing room with him over the years when I say it was a privilege to play alongside him.

“He'll be sorely missed by all in England cricket and our supporters will thank him for some incredible memories.”

“Trotty has a huge amount to offer English cricket and we wish him all the very best as he continues his career with Warwickshire,” Cook expressed.
