Justin Langer raises money for charity by breaking two world records
Former Australian cricketer Justin Langer broke two world records in an attempt to raise money for charity. The batsman faced 23 deliveries in 60 seconds to overhaul his former Ashes rival Andrew Flintoff’s Guinness world record of 19 deliveries, on Wednesday.
"It’s good to get one over Freddie actually. He gave me more bruises and headaches than most fast bowlers, especially towards the end of my career,” said Langer on a lighter note.
He also broke the record for the quickest time to put on a complete cricket kit. Langer took just 38.81 seconds to show up with two pads, two gloves, an armband, a helmet and a sweater. The previous record was reached in 78 seconds.
The Western Warriors coach has raised more than $2500 for charity till date. People donated money in order to have a bowl at Langer in his attempt for the world record.
"It’s for a great cause in Dry July and SolarisCare so today has been good fun,” the 43-year-old commented.
Dry July is a fundraiser that supports people who are suffering from cancer by making its volunteers go alcohol-free and invite them to raise money for the same. Langer is an Ambassador for the organisation that is now supporting SolarisCare, who help out cancer patients with their services.
“Having been brought up as a professional sportsman and now a coach, trying to encourage guys to be as professional as possible, actually giving alcohol up wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. Particularly with the great cause it’s going to, it’s a very, very small sacrifice for what is an awesome foundation and charity like Dry July,” the Aussie with 105 Test caps mentioned.
Langer failed in his attmept twice as he was able to face only 17 deliveries in a minute at the start. The coach will be traveling to India in September along with his Perth Scorchers side, hoping to repeat their success in last season’s Big Bash League (BBL) in the Champions League T20.
