Kumar Sangakkara breaks Adam Gilchrist's world record for most ODI wicketkeeping dismissals

Kumar Sangakkara

Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara, with 474 dismissals to his name, broke the record for the most number of dismissals by a wicketkeeper in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) during the 7th ODI against New Zealand today. Prior to the start of the match, Sangakkara was equal with Adam Gilchrist at 472 dismissals but has now gone past the Australian great.

The former Sri Lankan captain also went past Sanath Jayasuriya’s record for the most number of ODI runs by a Sri Lankan, overtaking the latter’s 13,364 runs.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Sri Lanka posted 287 for 6 from their 50 overs, largely thanks to Sangakkara’s magnificent innings of 113 off 105 deliveries. In reply, the Black Caps managed to muster only 253 before being all out, succumbing to a 34-run defeat in the process.

Despite the defeat, however, New Zealand won the 7-match ODI series 4-2 with one match having been abandoned due to rain.

Here are the top 10 wicketkeepers with the most number of dismissals in ODIs:
