Zaheer spins the coin, Miller calls heads, but it is tails. DELHI DAREDEVILS have WON the toss and have decided to BOWL first!
Two of Punjab's best T20 batsmen, Glenn Maxwell and David Miller, the captain, could not do well in the last game at the PCA Stadium, and would look to turn the tables on their opponents tonight. There were speculations raised over Delhi's squad selection for the 9th edition of the IPL when they picked up a brigade of youngsters in the auctions, including Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, Rishabh Pant, and Mahipal Lomror.
The U-19 stars didn't quite fire in their opening game, but it would be too early to read into things as the DD campaign is just one game old. Besides, they have a newly-found T20 hero in Carlos Brathwaite, who can change the course of the game on his own.
For Delhi, the opening was utterly dismal, much like the past couple of seasons have been for the franchise. Batting first on a slowish Eden Gardens pitch, the DD batsmen were bowled out for 98, thanks to some excellent spin bowling by Brad Hogg and Piyush Chawla. Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa then combined to make a cake walk of the run chase and hand Delhi a bitter 9-wicket defeat.
However, it was their bowling that gave them away in their opener against Gujarat as Finch marauded the bowling attack en route his knock of 74, while Dinesh Karthik chipped in with a vital 41 off just 26. Although Punjab were undone by Dwayne Bravo's guile and Aaron Finch's masterclass, their batsmen showed glimpses of form as Murali Vijay and Manan Vohra put up an impressive 78-run opening stand, while Marcus Stoinis played a 33-run cameo towards the end. Both sides, having already lost their opening encounters would be eyeing their first wins in this game, and on paper, at least, Punjab look to be a stringer side.
Hello, and welcome to Sportskeeda's live coverage of Game 7 of the Indian Premier League 2016 between the Delhi Daredevils and the Kings XI Punjab to get underway at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium, Delhi.
DELHI DAREDEVILS: They never arrived to play against Kolkata Knight Riders and nothing worked for them as they were bundled out for a paltry 98, and their bowling too did not inspire any confidence. Zaheer Khan however was very upbeat post the match and believed that one bad match was now out of the way. The teams have to now look on and both the captains will look to get things together. Zaheer Khan and David Miller were the surprise picks to lead their teams and they need to vindicate the choices. Hosts Delhi Daredevils will lock horns with Kings XI Punjab. Both teams have got off to rather forgettable start in the campaigns and now they will have to brush aside all the negativity and look to register their first win. The Indian Premier League has moved on to the capital of the country.
KINGS XI PUNJAB: They were brilliant in 2014, but it has been a morose period for them right through 2015 and then the first match this year will not evoke any optimism. With the surface at Kotla likely to assist spin, Delhi would want to incorporate Imran Tahir into their scheme things. They are back home and the crowd will be right behind them an opportune time to strike form. They have to get their team sorted, they have a good bunch of young Indian talent to work with and will now look to fit in overseas talent to round off their team. He will need to walk the talk as he started in a shocking manner himself with the ball. He is experienced enough understand the importance of a good game or else the ghosts of the previous season will return to haunt them.
PITCH AND WEATHER CONDITIONS:
Summer is upon us and North India is already on the boil. Delhi is notorious for the heat, and that will have a bearing on the pitch dished out. The toss might not be as important as there will not be any dew factor. They too have a good mix of young talent in their bowling attack and Sandeep Sharma and Axar Patel will be critical to the cause of the team. Miller is the captain now and like Zaheer if he plays well it will galvanise the team and will bolster their chances. They have positives though, the form of Murali Vijay and Manan Vohra at the top will certainly enlighten their chances. The form of David Miller and Glenn Maxwell is very crucial for them and it is their wickets against Gujarat Lions that caused the innings to be stagnated. Both the players will have to step up and perform.
Rahul Dravid is the mentor of the Delhi Daredevils and he will need to assemble to formidable side with proper balance. Will JP Duminy get a game as his off spin will bolster the bowling too and the fact that he brings with him experience.
Sanjay Bangar too have the task of extracting the best out of his Indian contingent, and then he will have to get Glenn Maxwell and David Miller into the right frame of mind. Shaun Marsh who suffered with food poisoning in the previous match is fit now and is available for selection. He should walk into the side, and that will bolster the batting.
Delhi vs Punjab’s Today’s Match Prediction:
We are vouching for Kings XI Punjab to win this one. The head to head stats are also in their favour.
