Mandeep Singh named India 'A' captain for South Africa tour match

Mandeep Singh had been brought on to field for South Africa ‘A’ earlier this year in an unusual incident

India selectors have named a 12-man strong India ‘A’ team that is to take on South Africa on 29 September at the Palam Cricket Grounds for the sole T20, the only practice game the Proteas will be playing before the long 72-day tour kicks off with the 3-match T20 series on 2 October.

Mandeep Singh, who had recently donned the South Africa jersey because of a set of strange circumstances, has been named captain of the side. A lot of T20 specialists, especially those who shone in the 2015 IPL, have been named in the squad.

Yuzvendra Chahal (leg spinner), Pawan Negi (left-arm orthodox) and Kuldeep Yadav (left-arm chinaman bowler) are the spinners in the side, while the medium pace attack consists of Anureet Singh, Rishi Dhawan and Hardik Pandya.

The batsmen in the team are KKR’s Surya Kumar Yadav and Manish Pandey, RCB’s Mandeep Singh, KXIP’s Manan Vohra and DD’s Mayank Agarwal. Sanju Samson is the wicketkeeper.

The match, originally to have been staged at the Ferozeshah Kotla, will start at 11.00 am on Tuesday. There has been a lot of confusion regarding this practice match – Delhi were supposed to South Africa’s opponents in the match initially.

India A squad: Mayank Agarwal, Manan Vohra, Manish Pandey, Mandeep Singh, Surya Kumar Yadav, Sanju Samson (wk), Hardik Pandya, Rishi Dhawan, Anureet Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal, Pawan Negi, Kuldeep Yadav.

Gurkeerat Singh, who is part of the India squad in the South Africa series, sent out his congratulations to Punjab teammate Manan Vohra, Mayank Agarwal’s opening partner in the India ‘A’ side. 

Meanwhile, the Indian team have started their preparations for the series in Bengaluru. The long series consists of three Twenty20 Internationals, five One-Day Internationals and four Test matches, with the first of the T20Is scheduled for Dharamsala on October 2.
