What’s the story?

Having played professional cricket for over 20 years, former English opener Marcus Trescothick announced his retirement from professional cricket on Wednesday.

In case you didn’t know…

Marcus Trescothick last played for England in 2006 and had announced his retirement from international cricket in 2008.

The heart of the matter

The 43-year-old Marcus Trescothick who had scored over 10000 runs while playing for England, finally announced that he would not play professional cricket from now on. Earlier in 2008, illness had forced him to quit international cricket.

While announcing his retirement, Trescothick said:

“It’s been an incredible 27 years and I've loved every minute of it. However, everything has to come to an end eventually. I've been discussing my future with the Club and my family for a while and we felt that now was the appropriate time to make this announcement in order for both the Club and I to put plans in place.
27 years is a long time, but it's gone incredibly quickly. I consider myself very fortunate to have had the opportunity to do something that I love for that length of time, and I'm extremely grateful for all the support that I've received throughout this remarkable journey."

After his retirement from international cricket, Trescothick had fought his way back into the English domestic circuit and had been playing for the Somerset side from then on. In his final season though, he has not been able to do much and has scored only 145 runs so far.

Trescothick was an amazing player for England and his contributions for his national side will be fondly remembered by every cricket fan.

What’s next?

With Somerset currently on the top of the points table and a major chunk of the season left, the veteran would hope that his side ends in pole position for the first time, helping him make it a memorable season to end his career with.
