Match Report: Sri Lanka vs Pakistan 3rd Test Day 1

Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene put on the highest partnership on Day 1 of 60 runs for the 3rd wicket

The Sri Lankan captain won the toss in the 3rd and final test in the series between Sri Lanka and Pakistan at Sharjah, and Si Lanka chose to bat first.

The Sri Lankan openers Dimuth Karunaratne and Kaushal Silva started well until drinks in the first session where they were at 31 for no loss after 13 overs. As we always see in cricket matches, just after the drinks Kaushal Silva was dismissed in the last ball of the fifteenth over by Pakistani seamer Mohammad Talha. Silva went for 17 runs from 47 balls.

Then, Kumar Sangakkara joined Karunaratne and took Sri Lanka upto lunch of Day 1 without the loss of any more wickets. At Lunch, Sri Lanka were at 64 for 1 from 27 overs (D Karunaratne 34, K Sangakkara 12).

Abdur Rehman struck in the first over after lunch and the Sri Lankan opener Dimuth Karunaratne, after having another good start to his innings went for 34 runs from 93 balls.

The mostt experienced partners for Sri Lanka, Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene joined hands for the third wicket. The Sri Lankan team reached 100 runs with the loss of two wickets from 37.5 overs. At drinks in the second session, Sri Lanka were at 103/2 from 42 overs.

Kumar Sangakkara just after making his half-century and after a 60 run partnership with Mahela, got out against Junaid Khan for 52 from 103 balls. At Tea, Sri Lanka were 133/3 from 57 overs.

Saeed Ajmal joined the party by picking up the wicket of Mahela Jayawardene [47 (108)] in his 62nd over and Dinesh Chandimal in his 66th over. Sri Lanka were at 166 for 5 at that stage, where Pakistan was really on the attack.

For the 6th wicket, Angelo Mathews and Prasanna Jayawardene joined together and played a rescuing role for Sri Lanka. Pakistan took the new ball in the 88th over.

At the end of Day 1, Sri Lanka were at 220/5 from 90 overs. Angelo Mathews and Prasanna Jayawardene so far have put on an unbeaten partnership of 54, with Angelo Mathews on 24 and Prasanna Jayawardene on 28.
