MI vs DD, IPL 2016 Results, Match Highlights & Updated Points Table

MI celebrate the fall of a DD wicket

In a crucial encounter, Mumbai Indians were up against Delhi Daredevils in the 47th game of the IPL. Both teams were in the contention for a playoff spot and few good wins could ensure that. MI had only 2 games left in the group stage and in order to stand a chance to qualify, they needed to win both with big margins. DD had four games in hand and a good run in those games could guarantee a top 2 finish.

This was going to be the second clash in the league between the two teams. Previously, DD had gotten better of MI with a victory by 10 runs. Despite Rohit’s efforts of 65 runs,MI fell short of DD’s score of 164 by 10 runs. Sanju Samson once again scored a half century against MI and was adjudged the man of the match.

The head to head record of these teams before the match was in favor of DD. They have won 9 games against MI as compared to 8 of MI. But there has been a history of MI’s campaign picking up in the second half of the league and exactly what has happened this time as well. With just 2 games to go for MI, they would want to win the game by hook or by crook.

Delhi Daredevils won the toss and elected to field first.

Playing XIs:

Delhi Daredevils:

Openers provided MI a positive start

Rohit hit a four and a six in the very first over to get the innings moving. Martin Guptill making a comeback was off to a cautious start. Rohit was looking in an ominous touch and good to get a big one. Both took MI safely to 45 runs without loss at the end of the powerplay.

Krunal Pandya went berserk

Rohit departed soon after the powerplay, his innings ended for 31 courtesy a diving catch by Rishabh Pant off Mishra’s bowling. But then arrived Krunal and took the attack to the bowlers (especially the spinners). He was in a destructive mood right from the beginning. Guptill too chipped in with a couple of big hits. MI raced off to 120 for just 1 wicket after 13 overs

A strong finish sailed MI past 200

Guptill missed out on a half-century as Zaheer sent him back for 48. Krunal Pandya went from good to better as he smashed 86 off just 37 balls. He hit 7 fours and 6 sixes and absolutely murdered the bowling. It was clean striking at its best. He was relentless especially on the spinners as he scores 69 runs of the 19 balls he faced against them.

Pollard failed to make an impact in the death overs as he was dismissed for just 3. Some late cameos from Ambati Rayudu and Jos Buttler powered MI to 206/4. The highlight of the innings remained the swashbuckling knock of Krunal Pandya, just what MI needed at that stage of the league.

DD lost two wickets early

After a strong first innings score, all MI were looking for was early breakthroughs, which was exactly what they got. Vinay Kumar playing his second game this season was rewarded in his very first over when disturbed the woodwork of Mayank Agarwal. Quinton de Kock was timing the ball beautifully and hit some eye-catching strokes. Harbhajan then struck in the fifth over when he sent Karun Nair back for 8. DD were struggling at 49/2 as the powerplay ended.

Bowlers tightened the screws

MI continued to pick wickets at regular intervals to tighten the grip on the match. Samson was run out for 6 by Krunal Pandya, and then he sent the danger man de Kock back for 40. Bumrah then got Duminy and Pant of consecutive deliveries to seal the match for MI. DD were reeling at 90/6 at the end of 13 overs.

MI completed a pounding win

The bowlers completed the formality and picked up the remaining 4 wickets very quickly. Bumrah picked a total of 3 wickets for just 13 runs. Krunal shone with the ball too and grabbed 2 wickets for 15 runs. MI won the game by a thumping 80 runs.

It was a complete performance by MI. Batsmen scored big and the bowlers did the rest. Krunal Pandya was magnificent both with bat and bowl. He scored 86 with the bat and took 2 wickets with the ball. This win meant that MI moved to number 3 spot on the points table and kept their hopes alive to qualify for the playoffs.
