MI vs KXIP, IPL 2016 Results, Match Highlights & Updated Points Table
Mumbai Indians played host to Kings XI Punjab in the 43rd game of the IPL on May 13th. It was a crucial encounter between the two teams, especially for Mumbai Indians who were well and truly alive in the race to qualify for the playoffs. A win for them would take them to the third spot on the points table and would make their case stronger to finish in the top four.
On the other hand, KXIP were on the verge of being knocked out of the tournament. One more loss would bring down curtains to their campaign in the league. For them, it is all about ending the season on a high and consider the positives for the upcoming season.
The two teams were head to head for the second time this season. Last time, MI emerged victorious in a high-scoring encounter. Batting first MI had amassed a huge score of 189. Parthiv Patel played a lovely innings of 81. The bowlers then did the rest to restrict KXIP to 164. Parthiv was adjudged the Man of the match.
This match was going to be a thrilling one as MI were looking to win most of the matches from that stage whereas KXIP had the side still capable enough to spoil the party for MI.
Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to bat first.

MI got off to a disastrous start
The youngster Unmukt Chand, who was playing his first game of the season, had the worst possible start. He was dismissed for a duck by Mohit Sharma in the second over. Ambati Rayudu followed him by going back to the pavilion without opening his account. With two early losses, Rohit Sharma was forced to keep a check on his scoring rate. Along with Nitish Rana, he looked to consolidate the innings. MI reached just 21 at the end of the powerplay with 2 wickets down.
Wickets kept tumbling as MI struggled for partnerships
Rohit’s slow innings was ended by Axar Patel in the 9th over. He went back for 15 runs off 24 balls. Rana tried hard as he hit 3 sixes in his innings, but before he could flourish, Stoinis showed him the way back to the pavilion. Another collapse was on the cards for MI just like the one couple of games ago against SRH. Kieron Pollard and Jos Butler were expected to resurrect the innings once again as they badly needed a partnership at that stage.
Reckless MI restricted to 124
Yet another batting breakdown happened for MI in the league. There was no resilience from any of the batsmen and the bowlers just ran through the batting line-up. A total of 64 dot balls were bowled by KXIP bowlers in the innings and just the 5 fours were hit in the 20 overs.
Kieron Pollard looked good for a short while, but in the hunt to up the ante, he was bowled by Stoinis. Jos Buttler and Krunal Pandya failed to provide the needed impetus. The lower order could not survive against some disciplined bowling. Marcus Stoinis was the best bowler as he picked up 4 wickets for just 15 runs. Sandeep and Mohit Sharma bagged 2 wickets apiece.
KXIP started steadily
Tim Southee provided MI the perfect start as he dismissed Hashim Amla in the very first over for a duck. The pitch was doing all sorts of things to make the batting difficult. But Murali Vijay was timing the ball beautifully as he hit some classical boundaries. Saha too looked determined and the two slowly but steadily started to lay the foundation. At the end of 6 overs, KXIP trickled along to 32 for one wicket.
Vijay and Saha’s classical show
The two batsmen showcased some outstanding shots on a tough track. They were at ease facing a strong bowling line up of MI. All the hopes for MI kept going downhill as the partnership developed. Both were each other shot for shot. The duo brought up the hundred partnership in the 14th over. A mere formality was remaining for KXIP to get the remaining runs from that position.
KXIP cruised to a comfortable victory
Saha was looking to finish the game early and lost his wicket in the process but not before he had done his job. He scored 56 runs off 40 balls full of delightful strokes. Glenn Maxwell then walked in and walked back after facing just one ball without scoring. KXIP could afford such small hiccups because of the efforts of Saha and Vijay. They shared a partnership of 116 runs and ensured an easy win for the team. Vijay batted at a rate just above run a ball just what was required for a smallish chase. He finished with 54 runs off 52 balls.
It turned out to be a truly professional performance by KXIP. The bowlers did their part wonderfully well and stopped the powerful batting line-up of MI at just 124. They kept picking wickets consistently and never allowed the innings to kick off at any stage. The batsmen then backed up the bowlers nicely and the consequence of that was a near perfect game for KXIP which lifted them from the bottom spot to number 7.
Match Result:
MI 124/9 (20 overs) Pollard 27, Stoinis 15/4, Sandeep 11/2
KXIP 127/3 (17 overs) Saha 56, Vijay 54, McClenaghan 24/2
KXIP won by 7 wickets
MOM: Marcus Stoinis
