Michael Clarke doubtful for India tour due to chronic back trouble
Michael Clarke, who is suffering from back problem, is likely to be ruled out of the upcoming tour of India. Clarke was named in the 14-man squad, subject to fitness. He has been suffering from the problem for more than three months now, and was not fully fit even when he played in the Ashes.
However Australia needs Clarke badly for the home Ashes series, which begins on November 21. The selectors and medical staff are working with Clarke to make him fit for the home Ashes series. The medical staff has advised him a period of rest following a long tour of England.
“For me right now it’s about getting on the phone to Alex Kountouris, the Australian physio, and communicating with him as I have been over the last couple of weeks since he’s been back in Australia and we’ll make a plan from there,” Clarke said. “No doubt it’s quite stiff and sore but I’ll be guided by the experts on what I need to do now to try and get myself as fit as I can be.”
Clarke played the final one-day match at Southampton despite the back problem to ensure his side finished off the series on a winning note. Australia coach Darren Lehmann said that Clarke was desperate to play the last match, but will not be risked for India tour.
“He has returned to Australia for further assessment and the NSP hopes that it will improve in time for the tour of India” said national selector John Inverarity.
In the absence of Michael Clarke, George Bailey would be captaining Australia in both the T20 and ODI series. Also Callum Ferguson and Mic Naddinson are the possible replacements for Michael Clarke, while David Warner is not in contention for India tour.
Australia begin the India tour with a T20 match at Rajkot on October 10.
