Mohammad Kaif speaks about MS Dhoni’s first-ball run-out on ODI debut
There were many aspects of MS Dhoni’s life that were covered in the biopic “MS Dhoni: The Untold Story” starring Sushant Singh Rajput. One of those was his first ODI innings when he was run-out for a duck. The batsman at the other end was Mohammad Kaif, who has refuted claims made by Dhoni’s friend in the movie.
On ODI debut in 2004, MS Dhoni was run-out for a duck off his first ball against Bangladesh and the scene was unsurprisingly in the movie and the former Indian cricketer who was involved in the run-out has cleared the air surrounding the incident.

In his first ODI, however, Dhoni got off to a terrible start as he was run-out off his first ball after hitting the ball to the fielder. In the movie, the scene is depicted and as Dhoni walks away, his friend, who is watching the game on TV says “Kaif ka Galti Tha” (It was Kaif’s fault) and says that it was Kaif who first called him and then sent him back.
And after watching the MS Dhoni biopic and saying that it is an inspiration to youngsters, he also cleared the air about the incident and said, “Nahi Bhai, mera galti nahi tha” (It was not my fault).
Here is what Mohammad Kaif had to say about the incident:

In the first ODI against Bangladesh where Dhoni made his debut, India looked set for a big total as Mohammad Kaif and Rahul Dravid were batting, having completed their fifties, and the score was 173/3 going into the last 10 overs. But Dhoni came in and was run-out off the first ball, and Kaif top scored with 80 and helped India score 245/8 and eventually win the match by 11 runs.
Although Dhoni has gone on and played 278 ODIs and amassed nearly 9,000 runs at an average of 51.25 and strike rate of close to 90, he did not have the greatest start to his international career as he got out in the worst way possible.
While MS Dhoni: The Untold Story centered around his life leading up to the 2011 World Cup win, it also had several personal details and divulges into his professional career from the time he was a small boy in Jharkhand to one who became captain of the Indian cricket team.
