Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has been handed a major blow by the Kolkata Police following a complaint from his wife Hasin Jahan. An FIR has been lodged against the Kolkata-based cricketer on cases of rape, domestic violence and attempt to murder, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Shami has been charged under Section 307 (attempt to murder), 498A (domestic violence), 506 (criminal intimidation), 328 (causing hurt by means of poison), 34 (acts by several persons in furtherance of common intention) and 376 (rape).

Reportedly, some of the charges are non-bailable for which he can be imprisoned for 10 years or more.

Earlier this week, the fast bowler's wife had accused him of having extra-marital affairs and domestic abuse. Later Jahan went on to reveal that she was raped by Shami's brother, Hasib Ahmad last year.

“My husband’s elder brother, Hasib Ahmad, raped me when I went to my in-law’s place in Uttar Pradesh last year,” she said.

“I have been informed by Kolkata Police officers over phone that they have slapped non-bailable sections against Shami and starting a case against him,” revealed Jahan’s lawyer, Zakir Hossain.

Shami's contract with the BCCI was withheld as well and he wasn't a part of the list of players released by the board on Wednesday.

"The BCCI has taken cognisance of all the reports emerging about Mohammed Shami's personal life. It is purely a personal matter and the BCCI has nothing to do with it. However, keeping in mind that the woman in question has met the police commissioner of Kolkata, it is only prudent on BCCI's part to wait for any official inquiry to take place," a board official told PTI.

The charges mean that this just might be the end of the fast bowler's cricketing career. Shami has played 30 Tests, 50 ODIs and seven T20Is for India and has bagged 110, 91 and eight wickets in them respectively.
