Mohit Sharma: the new bowling sensation

Mohit Sharma

Mohit Sharma has been called into the Indian squad for the Zimbabwe tour later this year.

This became possible due to his excellent Ranji performances over the last two seasons. His prowess in the Indian Premier League was just the icing on the cake baked from his tireless domestic efforts. He even found a place in the ESPN Cricinfo’s Team of the Tournament after the completion of IPL 2013.

“IPL has got me recognition but my 44 wickets in 11 Ranji Trophy matches is the reason that I have received the biggest news in my cricketing career. I owe it to my state Haryana which has given me everything. Had I not done well in Ranji Trophy for two consecutive seasons, I wouldn’t have played IPL and not even got selected in the team,” an emotional Mohit told PTI today after being selected in the Indian team.

Asked about his strength, Mohit replies “My strength is to bowl out-swingers consistently and bowling to a channel. That has been key to my success and I will continue doing that.”

“Mahi bhai always told me to keep things simple. He is someone who would tell you to keep cool which is key to controlling a particular match situation. He did that by example and that is something that I will like to follow at whichever level of cricket I play,” Mohit concluded.

Mohit’s determination and perseverance has earned him his place in the Indian squad, which is a lifetime dream of any player. Whether he justifies his selection and proves to be a quality player for India on the international scene is yet to be seen, but rest assured he has already show his talent during his two matches for India A, as well as the recently concluded IPL.

Mohit Sharma is a childhood and school friend of the author, who recently met him before the rain-shortened IPL match between CSK and RCB at Bangalore towards the end of IPL 2013.
