most runs by a wicketkeeper in test

India’s MS Dhoni is part of the top 5 run getters list among wicketkeepers.

Here is a list of most runs by a wicketkeeper in Test Cricket. The Indian Captain MS Dhoni comes in at number 4 in a list which is dominated by some of the legendary glovemen the format has ever seen.

Player     Matches    Total runs  Batting Average   Highest Score

Adam Gilchrist (AUS)       96      5570     47.60      204*

Mark Boucher (SA)      147      5515     30.30      125

Alec Stewart (ENG)       82      4540     34.92      173

MS Dhoni (IND)       83      4459     38.77      224

Andy Flower (Zimbabwe)       55      4404     53.70      232*

1. Adam Gilchrist (5570)

Gilly without a doubt tops the list. The greatest wicketkeeper batsman of all times is rightfully on top with 5570 runs averaging 47.60. He has 17 Test centuries to his name along with 26 fifties. His exploits with the bat at number 7 were one of the huge reasons why Australia were the number 1 Test side for a long long time.

2. Mark Boucher (5515)

Just 55 runs short of Gilly but at a much inferior average of 30.30. He wasn’t known for making big scores, but still there has been occasions where he has provided some crucial contributions with the bat. He is also the only player to have played more than 100 Tests in this list before retiring with an unfortunate eye injury.

3. Alec Stewart (4540)

The wily English keeper is at number 3 in this list. With a highest score of 173, the 82 Test veteran made 4540 runs in his Test career. He scored six centuries and 23 half centuries in a glittering career that spanned 12 years.

4. MS Dhoni (4459)

This might surprise his detractors, but yes, it is the Indian Captain who is at number 4 on the list. Considering the fact that he is the only active player on this list, he might very well move a couple of spots up by the time he retires. Currently he averages 38.77 with six centuries.

5. Andy Flower (4404)

Purely in terms of technique, he was the best of the lot among the keepers. He is the only one in this list who manages an average of above 50. With 12 Test centuries, Flower etched his name among the game’s greats.
