Most wickets for Australia in ODI cricket

Glenn Mcgrath has picked the most wickets for Australia in ODI cricket. Australians, known for their art of sledging, always had the fire power in their bowling attack. It may sound biased, but Australia always had the best bowling attack when compared with other cricketing nations for the past two decades which also resulted in getting them four world cups. Here is the list of leading wicket takers for Australia in One Day Internationals.

  1.  Glenn McGrath: Fast bowler from New South Wales, led the Australian Bowling attack in 1990s till 2007 was part of the three world-cup winning teams. He had the nickname as Pigeon because of his long and thin legs. One would not forget the match where McGrath bowled with nine slips against Zimbabwe, that sums up his consistency. He also leads the leading wicket takers in ODI World Cup with 71 wickets. He retired from ODI cricket after winning the 2007 WC final match against Sri Lanka in 2007. He scalped 26 wickets in this world cup. He along with Shahid Afridi are the only bowlers to take two 5-wicket hauls in World Cup matches.
  2. Brett Lee: Another fast bowler from New South Wales. But unlike McGrath, Lee does not rely on consistent line and length. He rather deceives the batsmen with the kind of pace he generates. On his day, Lee can reach 160 kph. A gentleman off the field is very aggressive on the field. The fastest Australian, finished his ODI career with 380 wickets just 1 wicket behind McGrath.
  3. Shane Warne: Australia’s leading wicket taker comes third in the list for ODIs. You would believe the fact that he is behind Sanath Jayasuriya in the list of leading wicket takers in ODIs. One should also accept the fact that the worlds No.1 leg spinner was not as effective as he was in Test Cricket. No one would forget the matches where Sachin took on this Victorian legspinner.
  4. Mitchell Johnson: Australia’s new sensation in fast bowling, who displayed on of the greatest spells in the recently concluded Ashes is the fourth leading wicket taker in one-day cricket for Australia. He started his career as a tennis player and spotted by Dennis Lillee to make him as a fast bowler. Considering the number of ODIs played these days and the time left for Mitch, he should be ending his career as the leading wicket taker in ODIs for Australia
  5. Craig McDermott: Nicknamed Billy, led the Australian bowling attack in late 1980s and early 1990s. A text-book outswing bowler was the first Australian to reach the milestone of 200 wickets. He was appointed as the Australia’s bowling coach in May 2011. But he quit this role one year later citing the team’s busy schedule in 2012-2013.
