MS Dhoni, Brendon McCullum, Brian Lara and other legends to play in charity T20 match in September

MS Dhoni is the latest cricketing superstar to be added to the list of names who will be seen in action in the T20 cricket match between ‘Help for Heroes XI’ and ‘Rest of the World XI’, which is to be held on September 17 at the Kia Oval. The match is the first ever cricket fundraiser for ‘Help for Heroes’, a charity for British soldiers who have been wounded in the line of duty.

The initiative, named Cricket for Heroes, has gathered together an explosive lineup of retired and currently playing stars, making this the most celebrated charity cricket matches of recent times.

Dhoni will join fellow Indian star Virender Sehwag, Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi and South African ace Herschelle Gibbs in the Help for Heroes XI captained by England Director of Cricket Andrew Strauss and managed by the legendary Sir Ian Botham.

The Rest of the World XI comprises Brian Lara, Brendon McCullum, Matthew Hayden, Mahela Jayawardene and Graeme Smith as well as players such as Kiwis Tim Southee and Daniel Vettori. The team will be coached by Gary Kirsten and managed by Sunil Gavaskar.

Looking ahead to Cricket for Heroes, Dhoni said: “I am delighted to be joining so many cricketing superstars at the Kia Oval on Thursday September 17 and supporting such a worthy cause.

“I’ve always enjoyed playing cricket in England and I would urge all sports fans to support Help for Heroes on September 17 and watch some truly world class performers in action.”

Relatedly, Dhoni has been conferred the honorary title of Lieutenant Colonel in the Parachute Regiment of the Indian Air Force, and he recently completed a para-jump of 1250 feet after a two-week training programme at the Paratroopers Training School in Agra.
