Mumbai Indians' Rohit Sharma breaks a new record
With his appearance in the match against Delhi Daredevils at Sharjah, the 16th match of the 2014 Indian Premier League, Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma has overtaken Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s record of playing the highest number of T20 matches for an Indian player, a record that includes both international and domestic matches.
Sharma, who made his T20 career debut seven years ago, has now featured in 174 T20 matches in his career. He has amassed over 4302 runs at an average of 32.59. He has represented a total of seven teams in the T20 format: Deccan Chargers, India, India A, Indians, Mumbai, Mumbai Indians, Mumbai T20.
One of the most successful players in the IPL, Sharma was bought by the Mumbai Indians in the 2011 IPL auction. He was later made their captain after the then-skipper Ricky Ponting was dropped due to poor form. Under his captaincy, Mumbai Indians won their very first IPL trophy in the 2013 season and followed it up with a Champions League T20 triumph.
South Africa’s Albie Morkel holds the record of making the highest appearances in the T20 format among all cricketers. The flamboyant all-rounder has played over 264 matches.
