The Irani Cup 1997 was played between Mumbai and the Rest of India at the Wankhede Stadium. The game witnessed Mumbai winning the contest by 54 runs, with both sides coming up with impressive performances.

Interestingly, Mumbai lifted the Irani Cup title for the first time after 27 years in the 2024 edition under the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane. On that note, let's check out what transpired in the Irani Cup 1997.

Batting first, Mumbai were off to a fine start, with Wasim Jaffer (83) and Jatin Paranjape (113) scoring heavily. Then, Amol Muzumdar (97) and Sairaj Bahutule (71) lifted them to a strong total of 473. In response, the Rest of India were all-out for 279.

Anil Kumble made a major turnaround by taking seven wickets, as Mumbai were bundled out for 93. Chasing 288, the Rest of India could not go all the way and were all-out for 233.

On that note, let's take a look at Mumbai's playing 11 from their Irani Cup win in the 1997 edition.

Wasim Jaffer was terrific in the first innings of this game, scoring 83. However, he was dismissed on 14 in the second innings. In recent years, Jaffer has held coaching positions in the IPL and domestic circuit. In August this year, he was appointed as the head coach of the Punjab side for the 2024-25 domestic season.

Sulakshan Kulkarni returned with scores of 2 & 18 in this game. The keeper-batter resigned from the position of Tamil Nadu head coach in March this year. However, a few months later, he was appointed as Maharashtra's head coach for a two-year term.

Jatin Paranjape was the top-scorer for the Mumbai side in the first innings with a knock of 113. However, he was dismissed on 1 in the second. Currently, he is the head of selection in the Indian Street Premier League (ISPL). Previously, Paranjape has served as a BCCI selector as well.

Middle-order: Amol Muzumdar, Sanjay Manjrekar (c), Sairaj Bahutule, Amit Pagnis

Amol Muzumdar impressed with a 97-run knock in the first innings, but was dismissed for 6 in this second. Since October 2023, Muzumdar is serving as the head coach of the India women's team.

Skipper Sanjay Manjrekar could not leave any impact in this game, as he scored only 35 across two innings. Since the last decade, Manjrekar has been serving as a commentator and an analyst for different media houses.

The talented leg-spinner, Sairaj Bahutule was the finest performer for Mumbai in this game, as he accounted for 78 runs & 13 wickets. Bahutule recently served as India's interim bowling coach for the Sri Lanka series.

Amit Pagnis contributed a total of 24 runs in this game, while batting as an opener and in the middle-order. After being appointed Mumbai's coach for the 2020-21 domestic season, he resigned from the role after the team's Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy exit.
