Murali Vijay fined for breaching ICC Code of Conduct
India’s Murali Vijay has been fined for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during day three of the fourth Test between India and South Africa in New Delhi on Saturday, according to a release sent out by the ICC.
The incident came about in the fifth over of India’s second innings, when Morne Morkel appeared to draw an edge off Murali Vijay’s glove, who was batting on 3. The keeper held on to the catch, and the umpire raised his finger. Vijay indicated to the umpire that the ball had in fact only touched his arm guard as he walked off.
Subsequent replays showed that Vijay had in fact been wrongly adjudged out, but those replays were only for unofficial purposes, as the DRS continues to remain out of reach in India matches.
Vijay was fined 30 per cent of his match fee by Jeff Crowe of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees.
4th Test a black mark for Vijay
The player was found to have breached Article 2.1.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match”.
The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Bruce Oxenford, and third umpire CK Nandan.
All Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee.
With scores of 12 and 3, the Delhi Test has been a black spot for an otherwise phenomenally successful year for Vijay. With 195 runs in the first three Tests, Vijay had come into the 4th Test as the highest run-getter from the hosts’ side.
Virat Kohli, who was decidedly more aggressive on the same day when wrongly given out, seems to have gotten away without punishment. The umpire’s decision had later been taken back in his case because of a front foot no ball.
