Nathan Lyon blunder delays Sheffield Shield match

Bangladesh v Australia - 2nd Test: Day 4

What's the story?

Play was suspended at today's Sheffield Shield match between New South Wales and Queensland by umpires after a fire alarm went off in the player dugouts.

The Stuart Law stand, where the alarm was sounded, holds both teams, media and match scorers.

After the threat was examined, umpires allowed players to resume play.

In case you didn't know...

This is not the first time this has happened, with a New Zealand Test against South Africa stopped for 15 minutes; according to reports then, fans only began to evacuate after seeing fire tenders reaching the spot.

The details

Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon revealed that he was the one who had accidentally set off the fire alarm - as a result of making toast in the stands. Lyon said he had put the toast in for a second round and forgotten about it, with burning toast causing players to evacuate the stands for fear of a fire threat.

"(The toast) popped up first and I wasn't happy so I put it back down and I got carried away watching the cricket," Lyon said to reporters later.

"There's a first for everything."

Lyon also jokingly said Steve Smith would cover the fees for calling the fire truck to the venue.

The alarm had sounded a number of times before play was stopped, until umpires were alerted to the threat and quickly evacuated players.

What's next?

New South Wales were well-poised at 110/4 with only 18 runs needed to win, and eventually won the match by 6 wickets once play resumed.
