2024 T20 World Cup Points Table: Updated standings after New Zealand vs Afghanistan match
Afghanistan have taken a significant step in their prospects of qualifying for the Super 8 stage after they rocked New Zealand by a gigantic margin of 84 runs in Guyana. With this, Afghanistan are at the top of Group C points in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.
After being put to bat first, Afghan openers Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz put up 103 runs. New Zealand played, unlike their nature, dropping catches, missing runouts and stumpings regularly. As a result, Afghanistan ended up scoring a par total of 159 runs.
Chasing 160, the Kiwi batters never turned up. The deadly duo of Fazalhaq Farooqi and Rashid Khan completely ransacked the New Zealand lineup, sharing eight wickets between them. No Kiwi batter got to 20 runs as the BlackCaps were bundled out for 75.
Following their huge win, Afghanistan have gained four points and have an astronomical net run rate (NRR) of +5.225. They beat Uganda in their opening fixture.
Meanwhile, New Zealand have started their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign on a horrendous note. They will look to get themselves back on track when they face another tough challenge in the form of West Indies on Thursday, June 13.
The Kane Williamson-led side are currently at rock bottom in Group C.
Bangladesh edge out Sri Lanka in a thrilling Group D match
Dubbed the 'group of death', Group D has lived up to the moniker thus far, with Bangladesh beating Sri Lanka by two wickets in the most recent game. It was a low-scoring thriller in Dallas, where Rishad Hossain's three-fer earned him the Player of the Match award.
Bangladesh have opened their account with a much-needed win. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, are all but out of the group stages as they also lost against South Africa, who are currently the table-toppers.
