2024 T20 World Cup Points Table: Updated standings after Sri Lanka vs Netherlands match
In what became a dead rubber after Bangladesh's emphatic win over Nepal, Sri Lanka thrashed the Netherlands by a massive margin of 83 runs. This was the last match of Group D, with Sri Lanka ending the T20 World Cup 2024 with a morale-boosting win.
After being put to bat first, Sri Lanka lost Pathum Nissanka for a duck. However, Kusal Mendis led the charge with a 46 before Charith Asalanka played a match-winning knock of 46 off 21 balls. As a result, Sri Lanka posted the joint-highest team total in the ongoing edition - 201/6.
The Dutch began their chase brightly as well. However, once they lost Michael Levitt, it all went downhill for the Netherlands. They lost all 10 wickets within their last 73 runs, with Nuwan Thushara ending the spell with figures of 3/24.
With the triumph, Sri Lanka capped off their T20 World Cup campaign with three points. They finished behind the two qualifying teams in South Africa and Bangladesh.
The Netherlands, meanwhile, had a marginal chance to qualify but Bangladesh's win over Nepal earlier shut all the doors for them. The Dutch won just one out of their four group games and ended fourth in the standings.
How does the T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 groups look like?
After 37 group-stage matches, we finally have the final eight teams who will feature in the all-important Super 8 phase. South Africa became the first nation to qualify for the Super 8. The Proteas are grouped with co-hosts the West Indies and USA, along with the defending champions England.
Group 1, meanwhile, is also stacked with high-quality sides. Team India and Australia are the two powerhouses in the group. Both teams, however, cannot rule out the threats Bangladesh and Afghanistan carry.
The first match of the Super 8 phase will take place between the USA and South Africa in Antigua on Wednesday, June 19.
