2024 T20 World Cup qualification scenarios: Have India qualified for the semifinals after their Super 8 win over Bangladesh?

India beat Bangladesh by 50 runs in their Group 1 Super 8 match of the ICC Men's 2024 T20 World Cup at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua on Saturday, June 22. The win was India's second in as many matches in the Super 8 round. They were also undefeated in the group stage, winning three matches, while one game was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Sent into bat by Bangladesh on Saturday, the Men in Blue put up 196-5 on the board as Hardik Pandya top-scored with 50 off 27 balls, while Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant and Shivam Dube chipped in with knocks in 30s. In the chase, Bangladesh were held to 146-8 as Kuldeep Yadav claimed 3-19, while Jasprit Bumrah starred with 2-13.

Following the comprehensive win over Bangladesh on Saturday, Team India find themselves on top of the Group 1 points table in the Super 8 round. They have four points from two matches and a net run rate of +2.425. While the Men in Blue have not officially qualified for the semifinals of the 2024 T20 World Cup, it wouldn't be wrong to say that they have one foot in the knockouts.

Australia beat Bangladesh by 28 runs [DLS method] in their opening Super 8 match in Group 1 in Antigua. They have two points to their name at a net run rate of +2.471. If the Aussies beat Afghanistan in their second Super 8 clash in St Vincent on Sunday, both India and Australia will qualify for the semifinals.

In the above scenario, India and Australia will be on four points each, while Afghanistan and Bangladesh will be on zero points from two matches each. However, in the event of Afghanistan beating Australia and Bangladesh and the Aussies getting the better of India, three teams will finish on four points each.

In the above scenario, the run rate will decide who among India, Australia and Afghanistan qualifies for the semifinals of the 2024 T20 World Cup. As of now the Men in Blue and Australia are in a very strong position concerning their net run rate. Afghanistan have a poor net run rate of -2.350.

The India vs Australia Group 1 Super 8 match in the 2024 T20 World Cup will be played at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia on Monday, June 24. The match will begin at 8:00 PM IST and 10:30 AM local time.

India and Australia famously clashed in the 2023 ODI World Cup final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, a game the Aussies won by six wickets.
