"Accidental WTC champions"- Top 10 funny memes after New Zealand's thumping innings loss in 2nd Test vs Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka continued their recent dominance at home with another clinical performance as they beat New Zealand by innings and 154 runs in the second Test on Sunday (September 29) at the Galle International Stadium. With this, the hosts won the two-match series by a 2-0 margin.

After opting to bat first, Sri Lanka notched up a mammoth total of 602/5 before declaring their first innings. Kamindu Mendis (182*), Dinesh Chandimal (116), Kusal Mendis (106*), and Angelo Mattews (88) starred for them in the batting department with magnificent contributions.

New Zealand's batting line-up then collapsed like a pack of cards in their first innings as they were skittled out for a paltry 88. Sri Lanka then enforced the follow-on. The Kiwis put on a better show in the second innings by scoring 360 runs but that was insufficient as New Zealand lost the match by an innings and 154 runs.

Cricket fans reacted to the lop-sided Test match between Sri Lanka and New Zealand. Some shared hilarious memes on X and Instagram platforms. One of the fans wrote:

"Sri Lanka played some great cricket"- New Zealand captain Tim Southee after innings loss in 2nd Test in Galle

Speaking at the post-match presentation, New Zealand skipper Tim Southee reflected on the disappointing loss, saying:

"Very tough one. On the wrong side this week but it's a tough place to come to Galle. Sri Lanka played some great cricket. Yeah I think especially in this match (that NZ played under par). In the first match, we had a good chance to push for a better result."

He continued:

"A week at home and we regroup and go to India, it is very similar to this part of the world and we will take some learnings from here. We will find some positives - the way we played in the second innings was good. We enjoyed our time here."

The Kiwis will next tour India for a three-match Test series, which commences on October 16 in Bengaluru.
