Afghanistan vs India: Who won yesterday’s Super 8 match in 2024 T20 World Cup?
India beat Afghanistan by 47 runs in yesterday's 2024 T20 World Cup Super 8 match at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. Batting first after winning the toss in the Group 1 clash, the Men in Blue posted 181-8 as Suryakumar Yadav hammered 53 off 28. With the ball, Jasprit Bumrah (3-7) was outstanding yet again as Afghanistan were bowled out for 134.
Team India got off to a ragged start with the bat before Suryakumar rescued them with a typically aggressive knock. Rohit Sharma (8) completely miscued one off Fazalhaq Farooqi and was caught at mid-on. Rishabh Pant (20 off 11) looked threatening during his brief stay at the crease but was trapped lbw by Rashid Khan as he missed his reverse-sweep.
Virat Kohli finally spent some time at the crease, but had another disappointing outing with the bat as he fell for a run-a-ball 24. He tried to take on a tossed-up delivery from Rashid but only ended up hitting the ball straight to long-off. Rashid also ended Shivam Dube's (10) stay at the crease with a leg break that trapped the left-hander in front of the stumps.
Suryakumar and Hardik Pandya (32 off 24) featured in a crucial 60-run stand for the fifth wicket. Suryakumar won the battle against Rashid, sweeping him for a four and a six in the 11th over. There were some terrific strokes in his knock, which featured five fours and three sixes.
Pandya was not at his fluent best but allowed Suryakumar to flourish by holding one end up. Following the dismissals of the well-set batters, Axar Patel came in and chipped in with handy cameo of 12 off six.
Bumrah once again proves too good for the opposition
In the chase, Bumrah ensured Afghanistan were under the pump right from the start.
He dismissed the dangerous Rahmanullah Gurbaz (11 off 8), having him caught behind with a canny cutter. In his second over, he foxed Hazratullah Zazai (2) into chipping one to point. In between, Axar forced Ibrahim Zadran (8) to hit one straight to extra cover.
Afghanistan could never recover from the early loss of wickets and kept stumbling. Gulbadin Naib (17), Azmatullah Omarzai (26) and Najibullah Zadran (19) all got starts, but none of them could carry on as the chase fizzled out.
Kuldeep Yadav (2-32) justified his inclusion in place of pacer Mohammed Siraj, while Arshdeep Singh (3-36) finished off proceedings by claiming the last three wickets.
