Andre Russell ruled out as West Indies name squad for remaining WI vs ENG 2024 three T20Is
Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced the squad for the final three T20Is of their five-match series against England, with all of them set to be contested in St. Lucia. The hosts have made a couple of changes, including the exclusion of all-rounder Andre Russell.
Russell sustained an ankle sprain in the opening game at Bridgetown, Barbados, which has ruled him out of the remainder of the series. The Jamaican hammered four sixes in his 17-ball 30 in that game, but went wicketless in his two overs, conceding 27 runs. Shamar Springer will take his spot in the squad after making his T20I debut in Sri Lanka last month.
Having missed two games due to his on-field spat in the third ODI against England, Alzarri Joseph has returned to the fold and will replace Shamar Joseph. Alzarri Joseph bowled well in the ODI series victory over the tourists.
West Indies squad: Rovman Powell (capt), Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Shimron Hetmyer, Terrance Hinds, Shai Hope, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Brandon King, Evin Lewis, Gudakesh Motie, Nicholas Pooran, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd, Shamar Springer.
West Indies face do-or-die contests in the St.Lucia leg against England:
With England having aced both run-chases in the two T20Is against the two-time world champions, West Indies must win the remaining three matches to claim the series. The hosts had set an imposing target of 183 for England to win after contributions from Russell, Gudakesh Motie, Nicholas Pooran, and Romario Shepherd.
However, the bowlers had no answers to Phil Salt's assault as he scored an unbeaten 103 to help England win by eight wickets. While the West Indies dismissed Salt for a first-ball duck in the second T20I, Jos Buttler cracked a 45-ball 83 as they chased down 159 runs. The visiting captain's innings propelled England to a seven-wicket win.
