Argentina's Hernan Fennell becomes 6th bowler to take double hat-trick in a T20I
Argentina's Hernan Fennell joined a rare club of bowlers with his extraordinary feat against the Cayman Islands in their ICC Men's T20 World Cup Sub Regional Americas Qualifier.
The match was played on Sunday (December 15) in Buenos Aires. Fennell achieved the rare feat of picking up a 'double hat-trick' in T20Is. During the final over of the Cayman Islands' innings, Fennell grabbed four consecutive wickets to create history.
He first dismissed Troy Taylor on the third delivery of the over. On the next three deliveries, he dismissed Alistair Ifill, Ronald Ebanks, and Alessandro Morris to complete a double hat-trick. Hernan Fennell also ended with five wickets, returning with figures of 5/14.
He became only the sixth bowler to pick up a double hat-trick in the history of T20I cricket. Fennell joined an elite list of bowlers to have done so previously, which include Rashid Khan, Lastih Malinga, Curtis Campher, Jason Holder, and Waseem Yaqoobr.
However, his incredible feat did not come in a winning cause as Argentina lost the match eventually. Chasing the Cayman Islands' 116 for victory, Argentina were bowled out for 94, falling short by 22 runs.
Hernan Fennell also joins elite list after multiple T20I hat-tricks
Along with his rare feat of picking up a double hat-trick, the 36-year-old Argentina pacer Fennell also joined another elite list of bowlers to have picked up multiple hat-tricks in T20I cricket.
Previously, Fennell had bagged a hat-trick in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Americas Region Qualifier in 2021 against Panama in Antigua. Therefore, he is now only the sixth bowler with multiple T20I hat-tricks.
The other five bowlers to have achieved this feat are - Waseem Abbas, Pat Cummins, Mark Pavlovic, Tim Southee, and Lasith Malinga.
