Ashwin, Jadeja break 24-year-old record with big partnership on Day 1 of IND vs BAN 2024 1st Test
Ravichandran Ashwin (102* off 112) and Ravindra Jadeja (86* off 117) have broken the record for the highest seventh-wicket partnership for India against Bangladesh in Test matches. The duo added an unbroken 195 on Day 1 of the first Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Thursday, September 19.
With the huge stand at Chepauk, Ashwin and Jadeja surpassed a 24-year-old record for the highest seventh-wicket stand by an Indian pair against Bangladesh in Test matches. The previous record was held by the duo of Sourav Ganguly and Sunil Joshi, who added 121 in Dhaka in November 2000 in what was Bangladesh's maiden Test match.
Meanwhile, Ashwin and Jadeja also registered the highest seventh-wicket partnership in Tests in Chennai. The previous record was in the name of Jadeja and Karun Nair, who added 138 runs against England in 2016.
Ashwin joins Jadeja in elite club
With his sixth ton on Day 1 of the Chennai Test against Bangladesh, Ashwin became only the second player to claim 100 wickets and score 1,000 runs in the World Test Championship (WTC). Incidentally, his batting partner on Thursday, Jadeja, was the first player to achieve the feat.
Ashwin and Jadeja led a remarkable fightback for India on Day 1 of the Chennai Test. Bowling first after winning the toss, Bangladesh reduced India to 34-3 inside 10 overs as Hasan Mahmud (4-58) dismissed Rohit Sharma (6), Shubman Gill (0) and Virat Kohli (6). Yashasvi Jaiswal (56 off 118) and Rishabh Pant (39 off 52) gave the Indian innings a boost, but could not carry on.
When KL Rahul was dismissed in the 43rd over of the opening day's play, India had crumbled to 144-6. Ashwin and Jadeja then launched a splendid counter-attack to put Bangladesh on the back foot by stumps on Day 1. The former reached his second consecutive Test ton at Chepauk, while Jadeja came up with another fighting half-century.
Both batters struck 10 fours and two sixes each in their respective innings. The duo was completely dominant in the final session of play, clobbering 163 runs as Bangladesh's bowlers looked clueless.
