Bas de Leede earns unwanted world record after leaking 115 runs in 10 overs of AUS vs NED 2023 World Cup match
Bas de Leede had one of the worst days of his cricket career at the Arun Jaitley Stadium earlier today (October 25). The Netherlands all-rounder went for 115 runs in his 10 overs, thereby earning the record for the worst figures by a bowler in ODI cricket history.
Playing against Australia in a league-stage match of the 2023 World Cup, Bas de Leede was the last bowler to be introduced into the attack by the Netherlands captain Scott Edwards. Since de Leede bagged a four-wicket haul against Pakistan earlier in the mega event, Edwards backed him and gave him his full quota of 10 overs.
While de Leede managed to take the wickets of Marnus Labuschagne and Josh Inglis, Glenn Maxwell took him to the cleaners. The Netherlands pacer finished with figures of 2/115 after 10 overs. His economy rate was 11.5 runs per over.
Australia's Adam Zampa and Mick Lewis jointly held this world record before de Leede's spell. Zampa and Lewis leaked 113 runs each in their 10 overs of different ODI matches against South Africa in 2023 and 2006, respectively.
Adam Zampa was delighted to see Bas de Leede breaking his world record
It is rare to see a player celebrating the fact that his record has been broken, but Adam Zampa was ecstatic in the dressing room after de Leede ended up conceding 115 runs. Conceding the most runs in an ODI is perhaps the most embarrassing record for a bowler.
Zampa shared it with Mick Lewis for a few weeks, but both Australian bowlers have slipped to the second spot now, thanks to the Australian batters. It will be interesting to see if Bas de Leede's record will ever be broken.
As far as Netherlands vs Australia match is concerned, the Aussies have posted 399/8 on the board in 50 overs. You can follow the live score here.
