BGT 2024-25: Yashasvi Jaiswal 283 runs away from breaking Sachin Tendulkar's massive record in Test cricket
Young Team India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal played a brilliant knock in the second innings of the first Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in Perth. Having been dismissed for a duck in the first essay, the southpaw compiled a memorable 161 off 297 balls in the second innings, a knock which featured 15 fours and three sixes.
The 22-year-old will look to carry on the good form in the pink-ball Test, which begins in Adelaide on Friday, December 6. Jaiswal has had a terrific 2024 in Tests, having scored 1,280 runs at an average of 58.18, with three tons and seven fifties. The Mumbai batter needs 283 runs to surpass the legendary Sachin Tendulkar's record for most Test runs by an Indian in a calendar year.
Tendulkar notched up 1,562 runs in 14 Test matches (23 innings in 2010), averaging 78.10, with a best of 214. Overall, Pakistani's Mohammed Yousuf holds the record for most Test runs in a calendar year. He amassed 1,788 runs in 11 matches (19 innings) at a stupendous average of 99.33 in 2006. Yousuf's tally included nine hundreds and three fifties and a highest score of 202.

Jaiswal began 2024 in Tests on a disappointing note. He struggled during the tour of South Africa and was dismissed for 0 & 28 in the Cape Town Test.
The left-handed batter was sensational in the five-match home series against England. The youngster was the Player of the Match for amassing 712 runs in nine innings at an average of 89 as India clinched the series 4-1. The 22-year-old scored 80 in Hyderabad, 209 in Visakhapatnam and followed it up with 214* in Rajkot. Jaiswal also contributed 73 in Ranchi and 57 in Dharamsala.
In the two-match home series against Bangladesh, the talented batter scored 56 in the first Test in Chennai and was the Player of the Match for his 72 & 51 in the second Test in Kanpur. Jaiswal scored 190 runs in six innings at an average of 31.66 against New Zealand in the three-match home series in which the hosts were stunned by a 3-0 margin.
