Sri Lanka managed to score 230/8 in the first innings of the opening ODI of the three-match series against India on Friday, August 2, at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. India already white-washed the hosts in the three-match T20I series earlier this week.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have returned to ODIs after eight months, with the 2023 World Cup final against Australia being their latest match in the format. Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka won the toss and opted to bat first.

During the mid-innings break, Sri Lankan bowling all-rounder Dunith Wellalage reflected on the action that unfolded in the first innings and his fighting knock, saying:
"I think I prepared for this wicket. It was turning so I tried to play my normal game. As the wicket was slower, I tried to play the sweep and rotate the strike. They have a good batting line up but I think 231 is a good score."
He continued:
"We have Wanindu Hasaranga and good pacers. Wicket is not easy to bat on. We will look to forge good bowling partnerships and we can certainly put up a challenging show."
