The second Test between India and New Zealand commenced on Thursday (October 24) at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. The hosts ended Day 1 with a score of 16/1 in their first innings, responding to New Zealand's 259.
New Zealand captain Tom Latham won the toss and opted to bat first in the contest. Rohit Sharma gave the ball to his primary spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, in the seventh over after the pacers did not get any assistance from the surface with the new ball. Ashwin gave the hosts a breakthrough in his very first over by sending the opposition skipper Latham (15) to the pavilion.
Devon Conway (76) steered the Kiwis ahead with his second half-century of the series by stitching partnerships with Will Young (18) and Rachin Ravindra. Ashwin dismissed Young and Conway on either side of lunch and broke threatening partnerships. However, New Zealand motored along well, courtesy of a brilliant half-century from Rachin Ravindra (65) as the visitors reached 197/3 in 59 overs. Washington Sundar bowled a sensational spell at this juncture and picked up the remaining seven wickets to bundle out New Zealand for 259 in 79.1 overs.
Rohit Sharma then departed for a 9-ball duck as India reached 16/1 in 11 overs before stumps on Day 1. Yashasvi Jaiswal (6*) and Shubman Gill (10*) are unbeaten at the crease for India.

"I manifested for this to happen in this test"- Washington Sundar after his 7-wicket haul in 2nd India vs New Zealand 2024 Test in Pune
After stumps on Day 1, off-spinner Washington Sundar reflected on his bowling performance, saying:
"Amazing to be living the dream, I manifested for this to happen in this test. Thrilled to be part of this test, grateful to the coach and captain, unbelievable feeling. To be honest, I wanted to be accurate, no matter what, it's god's plan and it came through really well, just hit the right areas, changed my pace here and there. We genuinely felt, it'll start spinning from day 1, don't think it did in the second session, but eventually it did."
When asked about his favorite wickets, Sundar added:
"It's unfair for me to choose, amazing feeling. Certainly, Rachin, he was getting into decent position and also Daryl Mitchell's wicket I enjoyed."
