CSK get an option to retain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player as old IPL rule returns: Reports
Former Team India skipper and wicketkeeper batter Mahendra Singh Dhoni could be retained as an uncapped player for the upcoming 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The IPL Governing Council meeting took place in Bengaluru today, Saturday, September 28.
As per ESPNCricinfo, teams are allowed to retain up to six players - five as normal retentions and one as a Right to Match (RTM). With the purse now being bumped up from ₹100 crores to ₹120 crores, teams could spend as much as ₹75 crores in retaining five players.
Chennai Super Kings were facing a predicament regarding the retention of MS Dhoni, but they can now make use of an old IPL rule which has been brought into effect this year.
Back in 2008, the IPL introduced a rule which stated that any Indian player who had retired from international cricket at least five years ago would be allowed to enter the auction as an uncapped player. This rule was scrapped back in 2021, with none of the IPL franchises making use of it. MS Dhoni, having retired in 2020, can be retained as an uncapped player under this rule.
This rule has been revived for the upcoming edition and could see CSK using one of their retention spots for their talismanic skipper. Should he be retained, Dhoni will see his retention price go down from ₹12 crore in 2022 to ₹4 crore.
Impact player rule has been retained ahead of the 2025 IPL season - Reports
According to ESPNCricinfo, the highly debated Impact player ruled has been retained for this upcoming IPL. The rule was introduced back in IPL 2023, with contradicting opinions from both fans and experts.
There was a discussion with the franchises back in July this year regarding the rule. With no unanimous decision being made, the rule will remain in place for the upcoming season.
Kolkata Knight Riders are the defending champions of the IPL. They beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets to clinch their third title.
