DC vs CSK: Who won yesterday's match in IPL 2023?
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) beat Delhi Capitals (DC) by 77 runs in yesterday’s Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. With the thumping win, CSK also qualified for the playoffs.
Almost everything went right for Chennai Super Kings on the day, which began with them winning the toss and opting to bat first. The openers, Ruturaj Gaikwad (79 off 50) and Devon Conway (87 off 52), featured in a 141-run stand as CSK posted 223-3. Pacer Deepak Chahar then claimed 3-22 as DC were restricted to 146-9.
Chennai openers kicked off proceedings in solid fashion, reaching 52-0 at the end of the powerplay. In the tenth over of the innings, Gaikwad took on Axar Patel and launched him for consecutive sixes. He reached a half-century with a single off the next delivery.
Next, the CSK opener punished Kuldeep Yadav, clobbering the left-arm spinner for three back-to-back sixes. Conway also reached his fifty in style, whipping Khaleel Ahmed for a maximum over deep midwicket. The fine stand ended when Gaikwad holed out to deep square leg off Chetan Sakariya’s bowling.
Conway and Shivam Dube (22 off 9) build on the great opening alliance, adding 54 for the second wicket at a rapid pace. The latter lofted Ahmed for two sixes in the 18th over before miscuing another big hit to long-on.
Conway's fine innings also ended in the penultimate over, when he sliced a slower delivery from Anrich Nortje towards long-on. Ravindra Jadeja (20* off 7), though, made sure Chennai crossed the 220-run mark.
Warner’s 86 in vain as Chahar’s three-for hurts DC
Delhi Capitals’ chase was a one-man show. Captain David Warner scored a quick-fire 86 off 58. However, the next highest score in the innings was 15 by Axar Patel. Even as Warner kept hitting the boundaries from one end, a procession of wickets followed at the other.
Prithvi Shaw (5) chipped a drive to mid-off off Tushar Deshpande’s bowling. Phil Salt (3) sliced a catch to extra cover off Chahar’s bowling, while Rilee Rossouw (0) dragged the first delivery he faced back onto this stumps. Even as Warner raced to 50 off 32, DC were in trouble at 72-3 at the halfway stage of their innings.
Yash Dhull (13) was the next to go, miscuing one from Jadeja that spun away to backward point. There was some joy for DC as Axar and Warner combined to hammer the Jadeja for 23 runs in the 13th over. The thrill was short-lived, though, as Chahar had Axar caught at long-on off a slower bouncer.
Warner’s fine knock ended in the penultimate over when he holed out to long-on off Matheesha Pathirana’s bowling.
