Devon Conway to miss 3rd ENG vs NZ 2024 Test to attend birth of his child

New Zealand opener Devon Conway is set to miss the upcoming third Test against England due to the impending birth of his first child. The match is scheduled to begin on Saturday, December 14, at Seddon Park in Hamilton.

Conway has been replaced by Mark Chapman, who is slated to join the squad with the team soon ahead of the final match of the series.

“Family comes first in this environment and we’re all really excited for Dev and his wife Kim to welcome their first child. Mark was with the Test squad in India recently and returned to the Plunket Shield by scoring an impressive 276 - so it’s a good time for him to be joining us," New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said in a statement released on nzc.com.

New Zealand, currently trailing 0-2 in the series, are expected to arrive in Hamilton on Wednesday, December 11. The Kiwis are all but eliminated from the World Test Championship (WTC) final race and want to avoid a whitewash after losing a series to England at home for the first time in 16 years.

Devon Conway scored only 21 runs in two Tests against England

The left-handed batter was not in the best form to begin New Zealand's home season. On the back of some decent outings in the subcontinent, Devon Conway only recorded 21 runs in four innings in the home series against England.

He perished without recording double figures across both innings in Christchurch and was dismissed for a duck in the second innings in Wellington when New Zealand were set a mammoth target.

Conway was recently roped in by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) during the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction. The opener extended his stay with the franchise after they made the winning bid of ₹6.25 crore.
