Don Bradman's iconic 1947-48 'Baggy Green' sold for INR 2.1 crores

Australian legend Don Bradman's iconic 'Baggy Green' was sold at a whooping $ 250,000 (₹ 2.1 crores) at the auction on Tuesday, December 3. The auction house, Bonhams, said the cap was worn by Bradman during India’s 1947-48 tour of Australia.

The series was also his final Test series at home after which he played only the lone away Ashes series in 1948.

The auction lasted 10 minutes and Bradman's Baggy Green, which started at $160,000 was ultimately sold for a winning price of $ 250,000. Commonly referred to as 'The Don', the former Aussie right-hander toyed with the Indian bowling attack in the famous 1947-48 series.

Bradman scored an incredible 715 runs at an average of 178.75, including four centuries, in six innings as Australia won the five-Test series by a 4-0 margin.

Another Baggy Green of Bradman's, which he wore during his debut in 1928, fetched $290,000 in an auction in 2020.

The former Australian captain is considered by most as the greatest Test batter in cricket history, thanks to his phenomenal average of 99.94. Bradman finished his illustrious career spanning two decades from 1928 to 1948 with 6,996 runs and 29 centuries in 52 Test outings.

Bradman died at the age of 92 in 2001.

Virat Kohli is one century shy of leveling Don Bradman's historic mark for the most international centuries by a visiting player against an opponent.

Kohli's sensational unbeaten century in the first Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Perth was his 10th ( seven in Tests, three in ODIs) against Australia down under. Meanwhile, Bradman holds the record with 11 centuries in 19 Tests in England.

While Kohli has a total of 12 centuries in Australia, two came against Sri Lanka and Pakistan in multi-national ODI tournaments. The 36-year-old has a great opportunity to eclipse Bradman's record with four Tests remaining in the ongoing series.

Kohli will be back in action in the second India-Australia Test in Adelaide, starting December 6.
