“Every moment wearing the green jersey has been unforgettable” - Pakistan’s 2017 Champions Trophy winner announces retirement
Pakistan's 2017 Champions Trophy-winning all-rounder Imad Wasim is in the limelight once again as he announced his retirement from international cricket on Friday, December 13. Interestingly, Imad had announced his decision to retire in November 2023 for the first time but reversed his retirement after a successful Pakistan Super League (PSL) season.
He came out of retirement and made himself available for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024, which he also played eventually. However, the all-rounder took to social media on December 13, 2024, to announce his retirement once again.
Taking to his official X handle, Imad Wasim made the announcement, stating that he has taken the decision after careful thought and reflection.
"Representing Pakistan on the world stage has been the greatest honor of my life, and every moment wearing the green jersey has been unforgettable," he wrote in his post.
He acknowledged the love and support he has received from his fans throughout his career.
"Your unwavering support, love, and passion have always been my biggest strength. From the highs to the lows, your encouragement has pushed me to give my best for our beloved country," he further wrote.
While Imad Wasim announced his retirement from international cricket, the 35-year-old stated that he would continue to play domestic and franchise cricket. He managed to score only 19 runs from two innings in the 2024 T20 World Cup and picked up three wickets from as many innings with the ball.
Imad Wasim's record in international cricket for Pakistan
Imad Wasim was a part of the Pakistan team that beat India in the final to win the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy. He made his ODI and T20I debuts in 2015.
Imad played 55 ODIs and scored 986 runs with an average of 42.86 and a strike-rate of 110.29. He also grabbed 44 wickets with an average of 44.47 and an economy rate of 4.88 with best figures of 5/14.
Imad represented the nation in 75 T20Is and scored 554 runs with an average of 15.82 and a strike-rate of 130.04. He picked up 73 wickets with an average of 21.75 and an economy rate of 6.20.
