Explained: Why there is no reserve day for the India vs England 2024 T20 World Cup semifinal
Team India take on England in the second semifinal of the ICC Men's 2024 T20 World Cup at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on Thursday, June 27. The match begins at 8 p.m IST (10:30 a,m. local time). India and England had also clashed in the second semifinal of the 2022 T20 World Cup in Adelaide, which the latter won by 10 wickets.
The Men in Blue have been in impressive form in the ongoing World Cup, winning all their matches. In their last Super 8 game, they got the better of Australia by 24 runs in St Lucia.
England, meanwhile, confirmed their place in the playoffs by thumping United States by 10 wickets in their last Super 8 match in Barbados. Earlier, they had beaten West Indies by eight wickets before going down to South Africa.
While fans of both India and England are waiting with great anticipation for the second semifinal on Thursday, the weather could play spoilsport, as there are chances of rain affecting the mega contest.
Interestingly, while there's a reserve day in place for the first semifinal (South Africa vs Afghanistan), there's no such provision for the India vs England match.
Both the semifinals have been allotted a total of 250 minutes of additional time. In case of the India-England clash, though, the entire extra time of 250 minutes will have to be utilized on the scheduled day of the match itself. There's no reserve day in place for the India vs England game because there's only a day's gap between this match and the final.
While the India vs England second semifinal will be played in Guyana, the grand final of the 2024 T20 World Cup will be held at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados on June 29.
Keeping the schedule in mind, the ICC decided not to allot a reserve day for the India-England semifinal. Also, for a match to be considered as complete in the knockouts, a minimum of 10 overs per innings must be played.
Who will qualify for final if the India vs England 2024 T20 World Cup semifinal is washed out?
In case there's a no result in the India vs England semifinal match in Guyana even after the additional 250 minutes are utilized, the team that finished higher in their respective Super 8 group will progress to the final.
In the above instance, India will make it to the final, as they topped Group 1 in the Super 8 stage. England will be knocked out, as they finished second in Group 2. In case both semifinals are washed out, India and South Africa, who topped Group 2, will progress to the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup.
