For how many days did Aiden Markram hold the record of fastest hundred in Men’s ODI World Cup?

On October 8, 2023, South African vice-captain Aiden Markram broke Kevin O' Brien's 12-year-old record for the fastest hundred in Men's ODI World Cup history. Markram achieved the feat by smashing a ton off just 49 balls against Sri Lanka at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Aiden Markram held the world record for only 18 days. On October 25, 2023, Glenn Maxwell went berserk and smacked a hundred off just 40 balls against the Netherlands at the same venue, where Markram hit a 49-ball 100.

Maxwell finished with 106 runs off 44 balls, hitting nine fours and eight sixes. He crossed the 100-run mark with a six off a full-toss bowled by Bas de Leede, who earned an unwanted record for the most expensive figures by a bowler in ODI cricket history.

Kevin O'Brien took 50 balls for his century in the 2011 World Cup match between Ireland and England. Twelve years later, Aiden Markram bettered it by hitting a 49-ball 100, but Glenn Maxwell touched the 100-run mark in just 40 balls.

It seems unlikely that Maxwell's record will be broken any time soon. Perhaps, India's Rohit Sharma or Suryakumar Yadav have a chance of breaking this record when they play against the Netherlands at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium next month.

Aiden Markram will be in action on Friday against Pakistan in Chennai

Markram will be in action against Pakistan next on Friday (October 27) at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium. He captained South Africa in their last two matches of the 2023 World Cup since Temba Bavuma was unwell.

If Bavuma is fit to play, he might return to the playing XI as the captain. The match between Pakistan and South Africa will start at 2 pm IST. It is a virtual do-or-die encounter for Pakistan, who are currently on a three-match losing streak.
