"From diet to fitness... the pain of discipline is far less than the pain of regret" - Greg Chappell writes heartfelt letter to Prithvi Shaw

Australian great and former India men's head coach Greg Chappell wrote a heartfelt letter of support and advice to Prithvi Shaw, asking him to self-reflect, find his discipline, correct his lifestyle and leave no room for regret.

Shaw's promising career has gone downhill since he scored a Test century on debut against the West Indies in 2018. Alleged disciplinary issues, a failed doping test, a police case involving an influencer, fitness issues and unfavorable comments from the likes of Ricky Ponting about his attitude have all played a part.

Although still 24, he's far from the national team and was dropped from the Mumbai state Ranji Trophy team due to fitness concerns. In his letter, Chappell recalled how being dropped was a "most humbling yet valuable" experience that made him review every bit of his game, take full responsibility, and go ball-by-ball.

"That shift - from results-focused to process-focused - transformed my approach to both practice and games," Chappel added, as quoted by The Times of India. "I encourage you to take a similar journey of self-reflection. It's easy to blame circumstances, but ultimately, your response to these challenges will define your path. Elite athletes know that discipline and sacrifice are essential. It's about honing not just your physical game, but your lifestyle, from diet to fitness, with the understanding that the pain of discipline is far less than the pain of regret."

He added:

"Remember, setbacks are a part of every great athlete's story. Even legends like Don Bradman experienced being dropped and having to fight their way back. What made them great was not avoiding challenges, but how they responded to them."

Chappell had started the letter by saying he recognized Shaw was facing a "challenging time" but that it could also be a turning point in his career. He added that those who watched him play for India Under-19 think his best is yet to come.

"The door back to the Indian team is open" - Greg Chappell to Prithvi Shaw

Chappell ended the letter on an encouraging note, telling Shaw that he can still make an international comeback if he can show commitment to growth and change, and that he has everything to fulfill his true potential.

"The past doesn't define you, Prithvi. It's what you do from here that matters. You're still in your prime, with so many years ahead to make your mark. Take this time to visualize the cricketer and person you want to become. Surround yourself with people who inspire you to improve," he said.

Chappell continued:

"Take care of your body, get the right amount of rest, and build the strength and focus you need. The door back to the Indian team is open if you're willing to walk through it, but it takes a commitment to growth and change."
"Know that I - and many others - believe in you and are here to support your journey back to the top. If there's ever a way I can help or if you have questions, don't hesitate to reach out. You have everything within you to reach your full potential. Wishing you all the best on this journey. Regards, Greg," he concluded.

According to ToI, the Mumbai Cricket Association has given Shaw a fitness program to shed excess weight.
