Gerald Coetzee fined 50 percent of match fee for making inappropriate comment to umpire during 4th IND vs SA 2024 T20I

South Africa pacer Gerald Coetzee has been reprimanded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for expressing his frustration over a decision by the umpire with an inappropriate comment. The incident also resulted in a demerit point being added to Coetzee's disciplinary record.

During the 15th over of the first innings of the fourth T20I between India and South Africa, the umpire signalled wide for Coetzee's third delivery outside the off stump. The pacer was unhappy with the decision, and was hit for a six by Sanju Samson the very next ball.

Coetzee was fined half of his match fee for his conduct by match referee Andy Pycroft. The 24-year-old accepted the sanction, and as a result, a formal hearing will not be needed, deeming the matter closed.

Much like all of the Proteas bowlers in the series finale, Coetzee also endured a forgettable outing. He ended with figures of 0-43 off his three overs as India smashed 283-1 in 20 overs, courtesy of tons by Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma. The visitors wrapped up the series by a 3-1 margin after a thumping 135-run win.

Scott Edwards and Omar Sufyan also reprimanded by the ICC along with Coetzee

Separate incidents during the recent third T20I between Oman and Netherlands on Saturday, November 16 saw both Scott Edwards and Omar Sufyan incur heavy punishments for their actions which breached the code of conduct.

The Netherlands captain pointed his bat towards the umpire after being adjudged LBW, and went on to throw his bat and gloves on the field on his way to the dressing room.

Earlier in the innings, Oman's Sufyan Mehmood dished out a send off to Netherlands middle-order batter Teja Nidamanuru.

For their actions, the pair were each fined 10 percent of their match fees, and handed demerit points to their disciplinary record.

"Edwards was found guilty of two breaches - Article 2.8 and 2.2, which relates to “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match," ICC's statement read.
"Oman’s Sufyan Mehmood giving a send-off to Netherlands batter Teja Nidamanuru was deemed as an act violating Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct. It relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.”

Both players have admitted to the sanctions imposed against them by match referee Neeyamur Rashid Rahul, thus eliminating the need for a formal hearing.

Edwards scored 10 runs off nine deliveries before being trapped LBW by Jay Odedara. Sufyan Mehmood ended with figures of 1-14 off his sole over as Netherlands scored 147-9 in their 20 overs. Oman fell 29 runs short of the target to lose the series 1-2.
