"Great weekend of sport" - Kane Williamson ecstatic as New Zealand men's and women's teams create history
Ace New Zealand batter Kane Williamson was elated as the national men's and women's national cricket teams enjoyed a dream weekend in the sport. The right-handed batter took to social media to hail both the teams for making their country proud.
Day 5 of the opening Test between India and New Zealand in Bengaluru saw the latter register an eight-wicket win. It proved to be the Kiwis' first Test victory on Indian soil since 1988, breaking a 36-year drought. Later that night, the White Ferns defeated South Africa in the Women's T20 World Cup 2024 final in Dubai to seal their first title.
Taking to Instagram, Williamson wrote:
"Criiiiicket. Congratulations @white_Ferns, world champions! And the brothers in Bengaluru epic. Great Weekend of Sport."
The Kiwis have a shot at winning their maiden series on Indian soil when the second Test begins on October 24 in Pune.
"No news as of yet" - Tom Latham on Kane Williamson joining New Zealand's squad in India
With Williamson missing the opening Test in Bengaluru due to groin injury, Black Caps skipper Tom Latham said the veteran's comeback will be a massive boost for their side. The 32-year-old hopes to have the right-hander back in the squad at the earliest as he said, as quoted by Cricbuzz:
"No news as of yet. I'm sure those conversations will be had over the next 24-48 hours. So like I guess anyone of Kane's calibre, if he's right and able to come back and decide, that would be obviously great, but yeah, I guess selection headaches are obviously always a great thing to have from a team point of view, so fingers crossed he'll be right. I'm not 100% sure on that yet, but fingers crossed he can get over here as soon as possible."
Rachin Ravindra received the Player of the Match award after New Zealand's win in Bengaluru.
